    Bayesian optimization of the PC algorithm for learning Gaussian Bayesian networks

    The PC algorithm is a popular method for learning the structure of Gaussian Bayesian networks. It carries out statistical tests to determine absent edges in the network. It is hence governed by two parameters: (i) The type of test, and (ii) its significance level. These parameters are usually set to values recommended by an expert. Nevertheless, such an approach can suffer from human bias, leading to suboptimal reconstruction results. In this paper we consider a more principled approach for choosing these parameters in an automatic way. For this we optimize a reconstruction score evaluated on a set of different Gaussian Bayesian networks. This objective is expensive to evaluate and lacks a closed-form expression, which means that Bayesian optimization (BO) is a natural choice. BO methods use a model to guide the search and are hence able to exploit smoothness properties of the objective surface. We show that the parameters found by a BO method outperform those found by a random search strategy and the expert recommendation. Importantly, we have found that an often overlooked statistical test provides the best over-all reconstruction results

Se consigue así mantener la función excretora y además una capacidad de retención de la orina suficiente para que se produzcan micciones voluntarias en períodos de tiempo prácticamente normales.Due to the frecuency ofthe bladder's chronic diseases and their difficulty of solving them by treatment, we are using a technic of auto-trasplantation, based on the exchange of the ill organe by a ileocecal segment which should haue contention and expulsion capacity. This allows to maintain the excretor function and on top of that provides enough retention capacity of urine to enable voluntary mictions within nearly normal periods of time

    Logistic regression for simulating damage occurrence on a fruit grading line

    Many factors influence the incidence of mechanical damage in fruit handled on a grading line. This makes it difficult to address damage estimation from an analytical point of view. During fruit transfer from one element of a grading line to another, damage occurs as a combined effect of machinery roughness and the intrinsic susceptibility of fruit. This paper describes a method to estimate bruise probability by means of logistic regression, using data yielded by specific laboratory tests. Model accuracy was measured via the statistical significance of its parameters and its classification ability. The prediction model was then linked to a simulation model through which impacts and load levels, similar to those of real grading lines, could be generated. The simulation output sample size was determined to yield reliable estimations. The process makes it possible to derive a suitable line design and the type of fruit that should be handled to maintain bruise levels within European Union (EU) Standards. A real example with peaches was carried out with the aid of the software implementation SIMLIN®, developed by the authors and registered by Madrid Technical University. This kind of tool has been demanded by inter-professional associations and grading lines designers in recent year

    Relationship among research collaboration, number of documents and number of citations. A case study in Spanish computer science production in 2000-2009.

    This paper analyzes the relationship among research collaboration, number of documents and number of citations of computer science research activity. It analyzes the number of documents and citations and how they vary by number of authors. They are also analyzed (according to author set cardinality) under different circumstances, that is, when documents are written in different types of collaboration, when documents are published in different document types, when documents are published in different computer science subdisciplines, and, finally, when documents are published by journals with different impact factor quartiles. To investigate the above relationships, this paper analyzes the publications listed in the Web of Science and produced by active Spanish university professors between 2000 and 2009, working in the computer science field. Analyzing all documents, we show that the highest percentage of documents are published by three authors, whereas single-authored documents account for the lowest percentage. By number of citations, there is no positive association between the author cardinality and citation impact. Statistical tests show that documents written by two authors receive more citations per document and year than documents published by more authors. In contrast, results do not show statistically significant differences between documents published by two authors and one author. The research findings suggest that international collaboration results on average in publications with higher citation rates than national and institutional collaborations. We also find differences regarding citation rates between journals and conferences, across different computer science subdisciplines and journal quartiles as expected. Finally, our impression is that the collaborative level (number of authors per document) will increase in the coming years, and documents published by three or four authors will be the trend in computer science literature

    Patógenos y depredadores naturales del trips del trigo, Haplothrips tritici (Kurdjumov), en Castilla-La Mancha

    [ESP] En un estudio de dos años sobre los hongos entomopatógenos que atacan a las larvas del trips del trigo, Haplothrips tritici (Kurdjumov), durante el período de diapusa en el suelo, se encontró que Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin representa un factor de mortalidad importante, aunque con variaciones acusadas entre años. En los bioensayos de patogenicidad realizados se detectaron diferencias de patogenicidad entre aislados. Se detectaron varios depredadores potenciales de larvas diapausantes, dos especies de carábidos, Paradromius linearis Olivier y Microlestes sp. y varias especies de arañas. Sobre las espigas de trigo se encontraron larvas y adultos de Aeolothrips, que depredan sobre los huevos y las larvas I de H. tritici. Las larvas II no son presas de Aeolothrips ya que se defienden con éxito, llegando a invertirse los papeles, depredando H. triltritici sobre Aeolothrips. En las espigas se recogieron larvas de Chrysopa y sírfidos con síntomas de haberse alimentado sobre larvas de H. tritici, según se pudo comprobar en laboratorio. En cambio, las mariquitas (Coccinella septempunctata L.) no se alimentaron de larvas de H. tritici en cautividad. [ENG] A two year sampling of pathogens and predators of Haplothrips tritici was carried out in Santa Olalla (Toledo) during the years 1994-96. Among the winter mortality factors was found the attack of the fungus Beauveria bassiana, there being differences of pathogenicity detected between isolates. Its incidence was higher in a dry year than in a wet year. Several potential predators of overwintering larvae were detected, two species of Carabidae, Paradromius linearis and Microlestes sp., and several species of spiders. On the spikes larvae and adults of Aeolothrips were found which, according to laboratory observations, prey upon eggs and larvae I of H. tritici. The larvae II are not Aeolothrips preys since they defended themselves with success, the predator-prey role being inverted, H. tritici depredating upon Aeolothrips larvae. In the spikes larvae of Chrysopa and Syrphidae were collected showing symptoms of feeding upon larvae of H. tritici, according to laboratory observations. Coccinella septempunctata did not feed upon larvae of H. tritici

    Identification of mutations associated with pyrethroid resistance in the voltage-gated sodium channel of the tomato leaf miner (Tuta absoluta)

    The tomato leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera) is a significant pest of tomatoes that has undergone a rapid expansion in its range during the past six years and is now present across Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia. One of the main means of controlling this pest is through the use of chemical insecticides. In the current study insecticide bioassays were used to determine the susceptibility of five T. absoluta strains established from field collections from Europe and Brazil to pyrethroids. High levels of resistance to λ cyhalothrin and tau fluvalinate were observed in all five strains tested. To investigate whether pyrethroid resistance was mediated by mutation of the para-type sodium channel in T. absoluta the IIS4–IIS6 region of the para gene, which contains many of the mutation sites previously shown to confer knock down (kdr)-type resistance to pyrethroids across a range of different arthropod species, was cloned and sequenced. This revealed that three kdr/super-kdr-type mutations (M918T, T929I and L1014F), were present at high frequencies within all five resistant strains at known resistance ‘hot-spots’. This is the first description of these mutations together in any insect population. High-throughput DNA-based diagnostic assays were developed and used to assess the prevalence of these mutations in 27 field strains from 12 countries. Overall mutant allele frequencies were high (L1014F 0.98, M918T 0.35, T929I 0.60) and remarkably no individual was observed that did not carry kdr in combination with either M918T or T929I. The presence of these mutations at high frequency in T. absoluta populations across much of its range suggests pyrethroids are likely to be ineffective for control and supports the idea that the rapid expansion of this species over the last six years may be in part mediated by the resistance of this pest to chemical insecticides

    Multi-Target Prediction: A Unifying View on Problems and Methods

    Multi-target prediction (MTP) is concerned with the simultaneous prediction of multiple target variables of diverse type. Due to its enormous application potential, it has developed into an active and rapidly expanding research field that combines several subfields of machine learning, including multivariate regression, multi-label classification, multi-task learning, dyadic prediction, zero-shot learning, network inference, and matrix completion. In this paper, we present a unifying view on MTP problems and methods. First, we formally discuss commonalities and differences between existing MTP problems. To this end, we introduce a general framework that covers the above subfields as special cases. As a second contribution, we provide a structured overview of MTP methods. This is accomplished by identifying a number of key properties, which distinguish such methods and determine their suitability for different types of problems. Finally, we also discuss a few challenges for future research

    A new feature extraction method for signal classification applied to cat spinal cord signals

    In the spinal cord of the anesthetized cat, spontaneous cord dorsum potentials (CDPs) appear synchronously along the lumbo-sacral segments. These CDPs have different shapes and magnitudes. Previous work has indicated that some CDPs appear to be specially associated with the activation of spinal pathways that lead to primary afferent depolarization and presynaptic inhibition. Visual detection and classification of these CDPs provides relevant information on the functional organization of the neural networks involved in the control of sensory information and allows the characterization of the changes produced by acute nerve and spinal lesions. We now present a novel feature extraction approach for signal classification, applied to CDP detection. The method is based on an intuitive procedure. We first remove by convolution the noise from the CDPs recorded in each given spinal segment. Then, we assign a coefficient for each main local maximum of the signal using its amplitude and distance to the most important maximum of the signal. These coefficients will be the input for the subsequent classification algorithm. In particular, we employ gradient boosting classification trees. This combination of approaches allows a faster and more accurate discrimination of CDPs than is obtained by other methods

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Insect ryanodine receptors (RyR) are the molecular target-site for the recently introduced diamide insecticides. Diamides are particularly active on Lepidoptera pests, including tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). High levels of diamide resistance were recently described in some European populations of T. absoluta, however, the mechanisms of resistance remained unknown. In this study the molecular basis of diamide resistance was investigated in a diamide resistant strain from Italy (IT-GELA-SD4), and additional resistant field populations collected in Greece, Spain and Brazil. The genetics of resistance was investigated by reciprocally crossing strain IT-GELA-SD4 with a susceptible strain and revealed an autosomal incompletely recessive mode of inheritance. To investigate the possible role of target-site mutations as known from diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), we sequenced respective domains of the RyR gene of T. absoluta. Genotyping of individuals of IT-GELA-SD4 and field-collected strains showing different levels of diamide resistance revealed the presence of G4903E and I4746M RyR target-site mutations. These amino acid substitutions correspond to those recently described for diamide resistant diamondback moth, i.e. G4946E and I4790M. We also detected two novel mutations, G4903V and I4746T, in some of the resistant T. absoluta strains. Radioligand binding studies with thoracic membrane preparations of the IT-GELA-SD4 strain provided functional evidence that these mutations alter the affinity of the RyR to diamides. In combination with previous work on P. xylostella our study highlights the importance of position G4903 (G4946 in P. xylostella) of the insect RyR in defining sensitivity to diamides. The discovery of diamide resistance mutations in T. absoluta populations of diverse geographic origin has serious implications for the efficacy of diamides under applied conditions.
